12 Saves of Christmas: Day #1 – The Highway 70 Family
Each day, we’ll share one of FieldHaven’s 12 most heartwarming cat saves of 2021. Each happy story was made possible through your generosity!
“Help! I just found a crate full of cats at the side of the highway!” exclaimed Amanda when we picked up the phone at FieldHaven Feline Center.
She had been driving down Highway 70 when she happened to notice a large pet carrier that seemed to have been tossed onto the side of the busy roadway. Amanda stopped to investigate — what she found broke her heart. It was a crate full of cats and kittens!
Her first thought was to call FieldHaven. The cats were huddled together and obviously frightened. Their lives had been literally turned upside down by this traumatic event, but FieldHaven came to their rescue.
Once the cats arrived at FieldHaven, the crate was opened. Though frightened, the cats seemed relieved to be out of the scary environment on the highway.
Altogether, there were five females (some pregnant), one male, and one nursing mom with five kittens. Amazingly, everyone appeared healthy and friendly in spite of their ordeal.
Right away, they received food, water, and TLC from our team. We named each of them, even the tiniest kittens. Then, they received a thorough exam, vaccinations, and other essential care by our veterinarian.
The mystery of how the cats came to be on the side of the road, we’ll likely never know, but they appear to be an extended family – three generations of cats. Eloise, the oldest cat, seems to be the matriarch of the family. When she and a pregnant daughter gave birth, the total rose to 17 cats saved from a miserable fate.
Many have already been adopted, including Eloise and her daughters Ophelia and Ambrose, who are settling into their new home together just in time for the holidays. The youngest kittens, born just after their moms were rescued, will be available this week – also just in time for the holidays!
Your donations made it possible for FieldHaven to save them, yet there are many more cats waiting for help.
The Great News?
We’ve been gifted a $60,000 donation match for holidays!
That means throughout the holiday season, every gift is doubled, up to $60,000. Your generosity will go twice as far toward helping homeless cats! That’s pretty spectacular! Please make a gift for the cats today. We really can make the season of giving and love last all year long. Thank you for helping Eloise and her family!
With sincerest thanks and warm wishes for the holidays,
– Joy Smith, executive director of FieldHaven
