Leia’s Life is Changing in the New Year… Because of YOU

Leia’s Life is Changing in the New Year… Because of YOU

Just a few days ago on Christmas Eve, Pici, or Peace, as we are calling her, was found in a parking lot near a dumpster.

A post about her was circulating online, and a volunteer notified FieldHaven. We immediately responded to gather more information. We wanted to help.

She wasn’t far from our Marysville Cat Resource Center so we quickly rescued her.

Peace was in horrifying shape, but her future is bright thanks to YOU.

She was—and still is—extremely emaciated with a severely dirty, matted coat and an ugly mouth.

She was alert and chatty, which was a good sign, but because of how bad she looked we brought her to the ER at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Surprisingly, they found her to be fairly stable despite the condition she was in! She does have hyperthyroidism and dental disease but otherwise her bloodwork looks good.

On Christmas morning, she came home to FieldHaven. Her recovery was challenging. Because she was found in an advanced state of starvation, she is susceptible to refeeding syndrome, where rapid initiation of foods after such a period of malnourishment can cause the organs to shut down—making it a life-threatening condition.

To handle this, we need to feed her tiny meals throughout the day to give her body a chance to adjust to getting food again.

So far, she is doing good, and we are gradually increasing her food portions. When she’s not eating, she purrs, makes biscuits, and soaks up any attention she can get.

But wait! There’s more!

When we scanned Peace for a microchip, we found one—it was implanted 12 years ago by a shelter in the Bay Area. And while it didn’t have updated contact information, after some serious sleuthing we found what appears to be her former family. Her real name is Leia, and the last time her family saw her was 11 years ago!

We’ve been in touch, but it’s a very complicated story, so we don’t know if or when she will be reunited with them (or even if she can).

What we do know is that the proximity to where she was found from where she once lived… well, we don’t think she was lost. We think she was put outside and forgotten.

The good news is that every day Leia is getting stronger and we remain hopeful that her future is bright.
