12 Saves of 2024 #11: Nugget

Just over a month ago three-month-old Nugget had a pretty bad day—he was hit by a car! Thankfully, he was brought to the emergency room at the UC David School of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Vernau got right to work on him. Nugget was alert and responsive, which was good, but his back hind leg was limp. He was also dehydrated and covered in fleas.

Nugget first received warmed fluids to help with the dehydration. Then, he was sedated for radiographs, which revealed a tarso-metatarsal luxation in his back right leg. Basically, the tiny bones in his ankle that connect to his toes were broken!

His wounds were clipped and cleaned, his leg splinted and bandaged. He was given treatment for the fleas and parasites, and then under strict orders for cage rest so his body could heal. It was at that time that Nugget was officially transferred to FieldHaven for his recovery.

Priyanka is a veterinary medicine student at UC Davis. She recently joined our Community/Cat Assistance Team (CAT), and we were talking about Nugget in one of our meetings. When she heard his story and his connection to UC Davis, she quickly volunteered to be Nugget’s foster! Even better, she lived on campus, so she could easily bring him to and from any follow up appointments!

Could we have found a better place for Nugget to recover? We think not!

Just this past week Nugget was neutered, and he is officially ready for adoption! He’s a curious little guy who loves looking out windows, watching cartoons, and even playing cat games on the iPad (yes, he’s tech-savvy!). He’s a cuddle champion and will purr for hours.

When we get a call about a kitten who has the will to survive, we find a way to make it work—especially when we know UC Davis has our back. Nugget was lucky—his outcome could have been far worse—so we are so grateful he found his way to us just in time for the season of giving and love. After all, that’s all he wants.
