Adopt a Scottish Fold
In February 2025, the Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills (HSSF), a Placer County nonprofit organization, obtained a warrant to enter and inspect the cattery of an alleged “Scottish Fold breeder” and by definition, hoarder. They reached out to FieldHaven Feline Center for help, so we sent in FHAST, our FieldHaven Animal Support Team. Once a veterinarian confirmed it was in the best interest of the cats’ wellbeing to be removed from the cattery, FHAST provided the necessary skills to safely and humanely do so, while the case was properly handled by the court system.
FHAST assisted in establishing a pop-up shelter for the cats, lending our experience and skills for their housing, care, and more. We have been working side by side with HSSF to provide the very best care for all the cats. Due to the nature of their previous housing, as well as conditions specific to the Scottish Fold breed, the cats have required an extraordinary amount of medical and behavioral care. Dr. Sanchez at Companion Veterinary Clinic has acted as the primary veterinarian after their initial seizure, and thanks to her support, the cats have had extensive veterinary care, procedures, and diagnostics.
Scottish Folds are known to have an increased likelihood of dental disease, and more than 35% of the cats are requiring dental surgery prior to being placed for adoption. FieldHaven’s Hathaway Veterinary Clinic is performing many of those surgeries in addition to spay/neuter surgeries and other basic medical care.
In addition to the breed-specific health issues, the cats in this cattery have all been exposed to a parasite called Tritrichomonas. Every cat placed for adoption has had a fecal PCR (a diagnostic test) and received medical treatment as indicated by the result and as prescribed by Dr. Sanchez. It is important if you are considering adopting to review this information and speak with your veterinarian, especially if you have other cats in your household.
The past two months have been arduous, physically, mentally and financially, but we are seeing the results of our hard work and dedication showing in the eyes and faces of the cats. Those who were fearful of human touch are now reaching out for pets and love. Those who could barely move due to severe matting are now free to run, jump and play. Those with mouths so painful they could not groom themselves and every bite of food sent searing pain throughout their heads are being relieved of their pain and eating normally. Intact “breeder” males who lived their entire life in the confinement of a cage are now able to stretch their legs, enjoy the company of other cats, and revel in human attention.
FieldHaven is proud to have been part of this extraordinary project, and honored to work with HSSF, Dr. Sanchez, and others to bring new life to these beautiful, deserving cats. They are truly beginning the best rest of their life, and we welcome cat lovers to consider bringing one of these gentle, loving souls into your home.
We’d also like to recognize others who have helped in creating a bright future for these cats:
- Front Street Animal Shelter
- Purebreds Plus
- Dr. Cheryl Scott
- Donors who provided supplies and funding for this project
- Volunteers, especially those who spent thousands of hours helping to care for the cats, providing them with enrichment and unconditional love
Thank you to everyone who made this rescue possible.
