12 Saves of 2024 #12: Kelce

Lifesaving takes a village. From partners to cat advocates to kind people, it takes every single one of us to make a positive impact… and a little bit of… light.

At five weeks old, a homeless woman witnessed two boys using Kelce “as a football.” She rushed over to them and intercepted the kitten. She couldn’t keep him nor care for him, so she brought him to FieldHaven’s Marysville Cat Resource Center.

While Kelce was alert, he was also in pain. Two of his legs were dangling because of being kicked around like a football!

Right away we brought Kelce to the emergency room at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Radiographs revealed a fractured femur, but he was still a tiny bit underweight for surgery. So, they provided pain medication and asked us to closely monitor him for the next few days.

Kelce was otherwise happy and healthy. His appetite was good, and his energy high!

Luckily, he didn’t have to wait long for surgery. Within a few days, he had an appointment. Even better, his leg didn’t need to be amputated! The surgical team was able to place a pin in it to help it heal, so it was just a matter of time before he was back on all four paws.

UC Davis is a critical partner for FieldHaven when it comes to veterinary medicine. They have a special community surgery program which Kelce qualified for—meaning his surgery was of no cost to us! We couldn’t have asked for a better gift for the holidays!

Kelce’s life was saved because of our wonderful village. From the woman who rescued him to the amazing team at UC Davis to our foster caregivers—our village makes things happen.

Kelce will soon be available for adoption—and it’s all thanks to you. We are so grateful that he’ll have the home and family he deserves.

As our village, whether you donate, adopt, volunteer, foster, or share our social media—all that matters. Thank you for such a blessed year.

P.S. When we dropped off Kelce for his surgery at UC Davis, there was another tiny kitten directly behind us in line who was being surrendered. You can guess what happened—we took her in, too! Her name is Mulberry, and she just needed some extra calories to grow big and strong. She’s been in foster care with Kelce so they’ve been able to share their medical journeys, and she too will soon be available for adoption!
