Harris Survived the Unthinkable

Harris Survived the Unthinkable

Not even a month ago Harris was hit by a car on Harris Street in Marysville. We were able to save Harris, but she’s the reason we need YOU for Giving Tuesday.

Give for Giving Tuesday

Harris was fighting for her life in a near comatose state with blood seeping out of her mouth when she was found by a kind person who brought her to FieldHaven’s Marysville Resource Center. Knowing she needed emergency care, we rushed her to the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, where she was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), a partially broken jaw, and anemia.

The tiny two-pound kitten was in critical condition but Dr. Porchet and the emergency team were encouraging. They said her prognosis was hopeful but guarded. The swelling in her brain needed to go down for us to do anything further, so we held our breath for about 24 hours and waited.

Then, good news!

Harris quickly trended upward in her recovery. With each update from her medical team, she was doing new things; her eyes were tracking, she began eating on her own and moving around, grooming herself, and, as she was feeling better, hissing at those caring for her! Apparently before her mishap, she was a feral kitten?!

After 4 days in the hospital, she was discharged to the expert care of Dr. Vernau. A few days later she was transferred to the care of a FieldHaven volunteer, Priyanka, then just this past week, she was transferred to the care of Joy, our founder.

She continues to improve today and she is a true warrior princess! She exhibits every sign of a normal kitten… well, except for one little quirk… her hissy clapbacks and occasional nibbles when she gets overstimulated! She likely still has some healing to do, both physically and mentally, but we are here for her as long as it takes.
